Driving Test Chaos: Long Waits, Unfair Costs, No Solutions

Young woman getting passed her driving certificate

Driving test wait times in Surrey Heath are unacceptable, with learners facing six to nine-month delays and some travelling hundreds of miles for a test. The GOV.UK booking system is failing, forcing many to pay up to £400 to third-party services just to secure a slot.

Al has raised this issue in Parliament and written to the Secretary of State for Transport and DVSA Chief, calling for urgent reforms, including:

  • Banning third-party booking services to stop unfair charges.
  • Recruiting more examiners to reduce waiting times.
  • Extending test centre hours to increase availability.
  • Opening new test centres to ease demand.

The Government’s 7-point plan is a start, but it doesn’t go far enough to fix a broken system that is limiting job opportunities for young people in Surrey Heath, where public transport is unreliable. Your MP will continue to push for real action to make driving tests fairer and more accessible.
