Local Government Reorganisation

With unitarisation moving forward and no clear plan for managing council debt, your MP is pushing for proper representation, financial transparency, and the protection of essential public services.

Al Pinkerton has consistently opposed the cancellation of the May 2025 local elections, arguing that Surrey residents should not lose their democratic right to vote because of local government reorganisation plans.

As devolution proposals move forward, Al has raised serious concerns about both democratic accountability and the financial sustainability of the proposed new authorities. The six councils expected to form the new West Surrey authority collectively carry around £4.5 billion in debt following years of risky commercial investment strategies.

In Surrey Heath, the situation is particularly concerning. Between 2016 and 2019, Surrey Heath Borough Council invested £113 million into commercial property assets, including The Square shopping centre and House of Fraser in Camberley. Those assets are now estimated to be worth significantly less and continue to place financial pressure on the borough.

Al has pressed ministers for clarity on how these debts will be managed and how residents will be protected from cuts to local services or higher costs. He has warned that without proper safeguards, reorganisation risks creating financially unstable authorities from day one.

He continues to campaign for a fair deal for Surrey that protects local services, strengthens accountability, and keeps decision-making close to local communities.
