Surrey Heath MP Calls for Pavement Parking Enforcement

In a letter to Surrey County Council, concerns are raised over safety for children, families, and disabled residents

Recipient: Councillor Matt Furniss, Surrey County Council, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport, and Economic Growth (15/08/2025)

Dear Matt,

I am writing to you regarding concerns raised by constituents about persistent pavement parking issues across Surrey Heath, particularly in areas around schools and on public roads used by vulnerable groups such as children and individuals with disabilities.

Residents have reported obstructive parking on school zigzag markings, dropped kerbs, pavements and verges. These behaviours pose an ongoing risk to public safety and disproportionately affect those with limited mobility. While I recognise the financial constraints facing enforcement teams, especially in maintaining consistent coverage of high-priority sites, I remain concerned that current patrol arrangements are insufficient to deter repeat offending during peak commuter periods.

In light of these concerns, I would be grateful if you could clarify what steps Surrey County Council is currently taking to address road safety around schools and other high-risk areas across Surrey Heath. In addition to enforcement, I encourage the Council to explore complementary measures that could strengthen these efforts and support more consistent, community-focused compliance.

Therefore, I kindly ask Surrey County Council to consider the following measures:

  • Clearer and more visible signage near schools and other high-risk areas
  • Targeted awareness campaigns through local media, leaflets and social media to promote responsible parking behaviour
  • A review of enforcement patterns to ensure priority areas receive adequate and regular patrols
  • Regular consultation with local councillors and residents to identify congested areas requiring urgent attention

While I have submitted numerous Parliamentary Written Questions to raise this issue at the national level, it is essential that Surrey County Council takes proactive steps locally to ensure the safety and accessibility of our communities.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working constructively with you on this critical issue.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Al Pinkerton MP
