Surrey Heath MP writes to Surrey County Council about Two Key Arterial Roads
Despite paying some of the highest Council Tax rates in the UK, Surrey’s roads are among the worst—accounting for 25% of all national road complaints in 2020. With £320,000 a year spent on pothole-related legal claims, it’s clear residents are not getting value for money, and urgent action is needed on accountability, contract management, and infrastructure investment.
Recipient: Cllr Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, Surrey County Council.
Dear Matt,
I am writing to raise serious concerns about the deteriorating condition of key arterial roads within my constituency. While the broader local road network across Surrey Heath urgently requires repair, I would like to draw your particular attention to two major routes that are causing significant disruption and concern among residents.
The Maultway (B3015), particularly the stretch between Pine Ridge and Heatherside, is a vital commuter route linking Camberley, Heatherside and Deepcut. This road is plagued by numerous potholes, posing a clear risk to public safety, especially given its narrow layout and 50 MPH speed limit. The ongoing redevelopment in Deepcut has further exacerbated the issue, with frequent construction traffic accelerating the deterioration of the road surface.
Frimley Road (B3411) is another critical route, connecting the A30 to both Camberley and Frimley town centres and providing direct access to Frimley Park Hospital, a key healthcare facility serving not only Surrey Heath but also neighbouring areas. Despite recent works, it is evident that maintenance efforts have been inadequate. Only selected sections of the road, primarily those closer to the A30, appear to be receiving attention, while other heavily used segments remain in poor condition. Residents have increasingly reported vehicle damage, and there is growing concern that the quality and scope of the repairs are not being effectively monitored.
To support these concerns, I have attached photographic evidence to this correspondence that illustrates the extent of the damage and the serious risks posed to road users on both of these vital routes.
Additionally, a response to a Parliamentary Written Question revealed that the Department for Transport has allocated Surrey County Council £32.4 million for local highway maintenance in 2025/26, a 38% increase on the current year’s funding.
In light of this, I would be grateful if you provide detailed information on the following:
- What proportion of this funding will be allocated to highways within Surrey Heath?
- What measures are in place to ensure full-length repairs on key roads rather than piecemeal patching?
- What oversight mechanisms exists to ensure maintenance work is completed to a satisfactory standard?
Given the vital role that both The Maultway and Frimley Road play in the daily lives of thousands of residents, as well as their significance to national through traffic, I kindly urge you to prioritise these routes and provide reassurance that Surrey County Council is taking meaningful steps to ensure our strategic road infrastructure is safe, futureproofed and fit for purpose. I would also like to extend an invitation to you to visit Surrey Heath to see the current condition of these roads firsthand and to discuss a clear action plan for their improvement.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I await your swift response.
Kind regards,
Dr Al Pinkerton MP
