Letter to Surrey County Council: Road Conditions in Surrey Heath - Potholes

Surrey Heath MP calls for urgent intervention on road maintenance failures

*Full letter below*

Road conditions across Surrey Heath have deteriorated significantly, with residents reporting worsening potholes, repeated short-lived repairs and growing road safety concerns. After a sharp rise in correspondence and more than 1,600 responses to a one week public survey, I have written to the Department for Transport, alongside continued pressure on Surrey County Council.

Surrey Heath has high car dependency and limited alternatives for many residents. The condition of our roads is not a minor inconvenience. It is core infrastructure that affects safety, household costs and confidence in local services.

Residents report near misses, vehicles swerving around severe potholes on routes including the A322 and A30, and repeated vehicle damage linked to road defects.

I am calling for:

  • Greater clarity on how highways maintenance funding can be strengthened
  • Clear oversight of whether councils are meeting statutory maintenance duties
  • Transparent comparison of Surrey’s funding and performance against similar authorities
  • Stronger action where repeat repair failure undermines safety and value for money
  • A joined-up Government and SCC approach to funding and delivery accountability

Residents want more than reassurance. They want safe roads, durable repairs and clear accountability.
