Letter to Surrey County Council: Transport Safety at the M3/A322 Junction
Surrey Heath MP has raised concerns about the new infrastructure works at the M3/A322 Junction
Please see the full letter below.
Residents across Surrey Heath have raised serious concerns about the safety and effectiveness of the new M3/A322 junction layout. While intended to improve traffic flow, strong feedback from regular users suggests the scheme has created confusion, increased risk, and delivered little improvement to congestion.
A survey of 431 residents highlights the scale of concern: over three-quarters use the junction regularly, and a similar proportion report new safety or operational problems since the changes were introduced. Key issues include unclear signage, dangerous late lane changes, ongoing congestion, and poor traffic flow during peak periods.
Without intervention, there is a clear risk that safety concerns will persist and confidence in the junction will continue to decline.
The Surrey Heath MP is calling for:
- A full post-implementation safety and operational review of the junction
- Clearer, earlier signage and improved lane guidance, particularly on the Lightwater approach
- A review of traffic light sequencing in coordination with National Highways
- Further safety measures, including improved road markings and traffic management interventions
