Letter to the Prime Minister: Frimley Park Hospital Site Proposal
Surrey Heath MP reiterates calls to pause site proposal in letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham
Please see the full letter below.
Dr Al Pinkerton MP has written to the Prime Minister to renew his serious concerns about the proposed relocation of Frimley Park Hospital to the Frimley Fuel Allotments.
Everyone in Surrey Heath wants the hospital rebuilt as quickly as possible because the existing site is riddled with RAAC. However, serious questions remain about whether the Frimley Fuel Allotments is the right location and whether the process used to select it can command public confidence.
Local schools have expressed unequivocal opposition to the proposal because of its potential impact on pupil safety. They have also confirmed that they were not consulted during the site selection process, despite the proposed hospital being located alongside six schools attended by more than 3,300 pupils.
Residents have yet to see a credible, funded plan for managing the additional pressure on surrounding roads. The full cost of the necessary transport, access and utility upgrades has also not been published. Further concerns have emerged after several owners of alternative sites reportedly considered during the assessment process said they were never contacted by Frimley Health.
Questions also remain about longer journeys for disadvantaged communities, blue-light transfer times and the loss of valued local recreation space on Frimley Common. Despite Al repeatedly raising these issues with ministers, including at Prime Minister’s Questions, there has yet to be any meaningful ministerial engagement.
Key requests:
- Pause the current site selection process while these concerns are properly examined
- Commission an independent review of the selection process and its health, financial, transport and environmental implications
- Publish the evidence, infrastructure costs and financial analysis underpinning the decision
- Arrange a meeting between the Prime Minister, the Health Secretary and Dr Pinkerton
The people of Surrey Heath deserve the right hospital, in the right place, delivered through a transparent, rigorous and collaborative process that can serve local communities for generations.
