Letter to Health Secretary: National Cancer Plan

Cancer affects families across Surrey Heath, and delays in treatment cost lives. That’s why I’ve joined Liberal Democrat colleagues in demanding urgent action from the Government to end the unacceptable delay to the National Cancer Plan. After a decade of missed targets, patients in Surrey Heath deserve better.

Our community relies on Frimley Park Hospital and surrounding services, yet we know the challenges: long waits for treatment, workforce shortages, and gaps in access to specialist care. These issues are not abstract—they impact people here in Surrey Heath every day.

I am calling for:

  • Immediate publication of the National Cancer Plan, backed by proper funding and enforceable guarantees.
  • A commitment that every cancer patient starts treatment within 62 days of an urgent GP referral.
  • Investment in radiotherapy capacity and diagnostic services, so patients in Surrey Heath don’t face unnecessary delays or travel long distances for care.
  • A credible workforce plan to recruit and retain specialist nurses and oncologists for our local hospitals.
  • Expanded screening programmes, including lung cancer screening, to save lives through early detection.

Cancer care should never depend on your postcode. I will continue pressing the Government to make this plan a defining moment for British healthcare—one that delivers for Surrey Heath and every community across the UK.
