Presentation Bill - Vehicle Registration Marks (Misuse and Offences) Bill
Surrey Heath MP presses Government to crack down on number plate cloning
Following casework from a Surrey Heath resident, Al Pinkerton MP put forward a Bill which sought to This Bill seeks to:
- Create new offences for the misuse and illegal copying of vehicle registration marks.
- Require the Secretary of State to introduce measures reducing the incidence of misuse and illegal copying.
- Provide support for victims of such offences.
- Address connected matters to strengthen enforcement and accountability.
In Surrey Heath, Al was contacted by a constituent who had received nearly 20 penalty charge notices from Tower Hamlets Council, Transport for London, and the Metropolitan Police. He was shocked to learn that the police lacked sufficient enforcement powers to tackle this criminal practice, which prompted him to bring forward the Bill.
Commenting on the Bill, Dr Al Pinkerton MP said: “The current system lets criminals exploit a loophole, leaving innocent residents facing endless appeals and financial hardship. Today, I presented my Vehicle Registration Marks (Misuse and Offences) Bill to Parliament to close that legislative gap and ensure councils and the police have the powers they need to crack down on vehicle registration cloning."
